Father Joseph Mario Moctee, 61, was sentenced to three years in prison in the intermediate court on Wednesday morning, 9 October.
The sentence was pronounced by the magistrate Ida Dookhy-Rambarun. The latter emphasized the seriousness of the acts committed and that the priest abused the trust placed in him by the adolescent. The court felt that a strong signal should be sent to those who would do so.
The lawyer Bernard Marie, who defends Father Joseph Mario Moctee, said that "the option to appeal this verdict is open."
As a reminder, Father Joseph Mario Moctee was found guilty on July 22, 2019, on three counts of indecent assault on a 14-year-old boy.
The case dates from mid-July 2015. At that time, the teenager had in a statement reported that the priest Joseph Marie Moctee had touched him. Facts that had taken place at the cure of St. Anne in Chamarel.
